These tissues must be closed as soon as possible to prevent any infection and overflow of blood. A thread-like medical device is used for this purpose called a surgical suture. The sutures can be divided into two types absorbable and non-absorbable. The main difference between them is that absorbable sutures get absorbed naturally by the body after a while, but the non-absorbable sutures have to be removed manually. Absorbable sutures are made from easily dissolvable materials such as the intestine of animals, fibres, or artificially created polymers. The various types of absorbable sutures are&nbsp;<strong>Polyglycolic suture<\/strong>, Polyglactin 910, Catgut, Poliglecaprone 25, and Polydioxanone sutures. Polyglycolic acid sutures are braided multifilament surgical sutures.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Characteristics of polyglycolic acid sutures:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They are synthetic<\/li><li>They are well coated to allow easy passage through the tissues<\/li><li>They have a smooth tie down<\/li><li>PGA sutures have decreased tendency to irritate tissues<\/li><li>They have a higher tensile strength<\/li><li>Their absorption period is longer<\/li><li>They have predictable absorption<\/li><li>PGA surgical suture&nbsp;has outstanding handling properties<\/li><li>They are made up of 100% polymer of glycolide that is coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate<\/li><li>After two weeks, they lose 75% of their initial strength<\/li><li>These are found to be non-antigenic and non-pyrogenic<\/li><li>They are present in dyed (violet in colour) and un-dyed forms.<\/li><li>The absorption time of PGA sutures is approximately 60-90 days.<\/li><li>PGA sutures can be easily absorbed by hydrolysis<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Advantages of using polyglycolic acid sutures:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PGA sutures are tightly braided enhance their strength and also improve their smoothness<\/li><li>PGA sutures have an outstanding knot security<\/li><li>PGA sutures have excellent tensile strength thus, they are preferred over other absorbable sutures<\/li><li>They are more flexible than non-absorbable sutures<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Indications of polyglycolic acid sutures:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>General surgery<\/li><li>Urology (disorders of Urinary system)<\/li><li>Skin closure<\/li><li>Eye surgery<\/li><li>Plastic surgery<\/li><li>Paediatrics (in infants)<\/li><li>GIT (Gastrointestinal tract) surgery<\/li><li>Gynaecology (deformities in female reproductive system)<\/li><li>Orthopaedics (deformities of bones or muscle)<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Contraindications of polyglycolic acid sutures:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cardiovascular surgery- as it can cause rupture and dilation during or after the absorption phase.<\/li><li>Neurosurgery-<\/li><li>PGA cannot be used in some cases where extended wound support is needed for more than seven days.<\/li><li>If there is any kind of inflammation or itching on the wound site of the patient, then usage of PGA suture must be stopped.<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Storage of polyglycolic acid sutures:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is recommended to store them away from moisture and direct heat. They are sterilized with ethylene oxide.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Disposal of polyglycolic acid suture:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The needles must be discarded in the bin that is meant for infectious waste.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surgeons usually evaluate your wound site to decide about the best type of suture to be used.&nbsp;<strong>Vicryl<\/strong>&nbsp;(Polyglactin 910) was the second type of surgical sutures to become available. Surgeons from all over the world use these sutures for performing surgeries. The surgeon should be well aware of all the types of sutures and the purpose of each suture. The suture must not be used after the expiration date otherwise, it can cause adverse effects.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cada vez que sufrimos un corte o una lesi\u00f3n, nuestros tejidos se desgarran. Los distintos tipos de suturas reabsorbibles son las suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico, poliglactina 910, catgut, poliglecaprona 25 y polidioxanona. Las suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico son suturas quir\u00fargicas multifilamento trenzadas. Caracter\u00edsticas de las suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico: Son sint\u00e9ticas. Est\u00e1n bien recubiertas para permitir un f\u00e1cil paso a trav\u00e9s de los tejidos. Tienen un nudo suave. Las suturas de PGA tienen una menor tendencia a irritar los tejidos. Tienen una mayor resistencia a la tracci\u00f3n. Su per\u00edodo de absorci\u00f3n es m\u00e1s largo. Tienen una absorci\u00f3n predecible. La sutura quir\u00fargica de PGA tiene unas propiedades de manejo excepcionales. Est\u00e1n compuestas por un pol\u00edmero de glicolida recubierto con policaprolactona y estearato de calcio. Tras dos semanas, pierden el 75 % de su resistencia inicial. Se ha comprobado que no son antig\u00e9nicas ni pirog\u00e9nicas. Se comercializan en versiones te\u00f1idas (de color violeta) y sin te\u00f1ir. El tiempo de absorci\u00f3n de las suturas de PGA es de aproximadamente 60-90 d\u00edas. Las suturas de PGA se absorben f\u00e1cilmente por hidr\u00f3lisis. Ventajas del uso de suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico: las suturas de PGA est\u00e1n trenzadas de forma compacta, lo que aumenta su resistencia y mejora su suavidad; las suturas de PGA tienen una seguridad de nudo excepcional; las suturas de PGA tienen una excelente resistencia a la tracci\u00f3n, por lo que se prefieren frente a otras suturas reabsorbibles; son m\u00e1s flexibles que las suturas no reabsorbibles. Indicaciones de las suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico: Cirug\u00eda general. Urolog\u00eda (trastornos del sistema urinario). Cierre de heridas cut\u00e1neas. Cirug\u00eda ocular. Cirug\u00eda pl\u00e1stica. Pediatr\u00eda (en lactantes). Cirug\u00eda del tracto gastrointestinal (GIT). Ginecolog\u00eda (deformidades del sistema reproductivo femenino). Ortopedia (deformidades \u00f3seas o musculares). Contraindicaciones de las suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico: Cirug\u00eda cardiovascular, ya que puede provocar roturas y dilataciones durante o despu\u00e9s de la fase de absorci\u00f3n. Neurocirug\u00eda: el PGA no se puede utilizar en algunos casos en los que se necesita un soporte prolongado de la herida durante m\u00e1s de siete d\u00edas. Si se produce cualquier tipo de inflamaci\u00f3n o picor en la zona de la herida del paciente, se debe suspender el uso de la sutura de PGA. Almacenamiento de las suturas de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico: Se recomienda almacenarlas lejos de la humedad y del calor directo. Se esterilizan con \u00f3xido de etileno. Eliminaci\u00f3n de la sutura de \u00e1cido poliglic\u00f3lico: Las agujas deben desecharse en el contenedor destinado a residuos infecciosos. Los cirujanos suelen evaluar la zona de la herida para decidir cu\u00e1l es el mejor tipo de sutura a utilizar.\u00a0Vicryl (poliglactina 910) fue el segundo tipo de sutura quir\u00fargica en salir al mercado. Cirujanos de todo el mundo utilizan estas suturas para realizar intervenciones quir\u00fargicas. El cirujano debe conocer bien todos los tipos de suturas y la finalidad de cada una de ellas.
